On 4 September the lower house of the newly-elected Congress – sworn in on 1 September – overwhelmingly approved, with 357 votes in favour and 130 against, a controversial judicial overhaul that would introduce elections for all judges. a move supported by the ruling Morena party but criticised by the opposition. The bill – proposed by outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) as part of broader constitutional amendments – would alter the appointments of 7,000 judges and magistrates to an election system and reduce the number of Supreme Court judges – to be elected in June 2025 – from 11 to 9. The bill will now head to the Senate for debate on 11 September, where the vote is expected to be closer but still likely to pass.
