On 20 October former defence minister Prabowo Subianto was inaugurated as Indonesia’s eighth president and its first new president in ten years. Subianto took over from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and on 21 October officially swore in one of the largest cabinets in Indonesian history with 48 ministries and 109 ministers and deputies. This reflected Subianto’s desire to “create a strong government that would unite [Indonesia’s] multicultural society and diverse political interests”. Included within the large cabinet are several ministers who served under President Jokowi’s administration, including Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. Key programmes of Subianto’s cabinet include spending IDR71tn (US$4.60bln) to provide free meals to 20 million children, upgrading online data protection and including fisheries among industries with increased domestic resource processing.
