Indonesia: Rallying Against Rising Inequality

Indonesia: Rallying Against Rising Inequality

This AKE short report examines the causes, nature and likely outcomes of Indonesia’s August 2025 anti-corruption protests. The demonstrations spread countrywide after police in Jakarta accidentally killed a delivery driver during a 28 August rally against property tax increases and a housing allowance hike of IDR 50m (US$3,045) for lawmakers. Protests had been escalating since 11 August, led by student groups condemning what they see as growing inequality between Indonesia’s elite and the wider public, as well as the military’s expanding role in civilian affairs. Although negotiations between the government and student groups have cautiously begun, tensions are expected to remain high in the world’s third-largest democracy.
