On 1 August protests under the moniker #EndBadGovernment erupted in Abuja, Lagos and other major urban centres throughout the country. Protests were initially scheduled to last from 1 August to 15 August but organisers shifted the end date to 11 August under a #10DaysofRage campaign. Although on 5 August President Bola Tinubu called for dialogue to address grievances and placate the protesters after protests started on 1 August, protest leaders have rejected all calls for dialogue, stating that Tinubu’s administration has worsened the cost-of-living crisis. Protest attendance dropped between 1 and 11 August due to police crackdowns, with at least 22 protesters killed and hundreds of others injured. As protests ended on 11 August, protest organisers announced a second round of protests for 1 October – Nigeria’s Independence Day.
