On 8 August Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus was sworn in to lead an interim government as chief adviser following the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a violent uprising on 5 August. The interim government has been tasked with returning political stability, holding fresh elections and restoring law and order. Retired Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hossain – a former election commissioner who now oversees the Home Affairs Ministry – also stressed the urgent need to renew public confidence in the country’s security forces and law enforcement agencies, particularly those that played a key role in suppressing recent protests. The interim government now needs to contend with a fragile security environment, facing a public that is clamouring for justice and accountability after 15 years of reviled rule, in a country highly prone to political and communal violence.
