On 12 September President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the dissolution of the National Assembly and scheduled new legislative elections for 17 November. This came amid growing tensions between the ruling African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) and the opposition Benno Yok Yakaar (BYY) coalition over increasing political gridlock. Persisting rumours of the legislature’s dissolution from Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and a potential motion of censure from the opposition likely influenced Faye’s decision.
