Botswana went to the polls on 30 October in what was set up to be a run-of-the-mill election for the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which governed the country since independence in 1966. Instead, the BDP suffered a resounding defeat to the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition led by the Botswana National Front’s Duma Boko. UDC secured 36 of 61 parliamentary seats, significantly outweighing BDP’s four, marking a defiant rejection of the liberation party.
