On 30 December 2024 Prime Minister Keith Rowley’s government declared a state of emergency (SoE) amid a surge in gang-related violence. The move followed a series of homicides over the weekend of 28-29 December. On 28 December a gang member was killed in a shooting attack allegedly targeting the gang leader – who survived – in the eastern part of the capital Port of Spain. On 29 December five people were killed and one was injured in a shooting attack in Laventille, San Juan-Laventille region, believed to be an act of retaliation. The SoE permits joint police-military operations, warrantless searches, bail suspension and arrests by the military.
