AKE Insights Report – Replacing Boris
This special report looks at the race to replace UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In the first stage of voting MPs narrowed the field to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak. While Sunak received the support of more MPs than Truss, she appears to have a commanding lead in the second stage, with polls among members putting her around 20 points ahead. Sunak and Truss differ on several important areas of policy, which will likely have a huge impact on the UK in the coming years. Their first and most pressing concerns will be the economy and inflation. It is difficult to look at either candidate as having a workable plan to moderate inflation or mitigate its impacts. Absent a benign shift in global economic conditions, the main role of tackling inflation will fall to the Bank of England.
